UPC-A and GTIN-12

A UPC-A symbol encodes a 12-digit identifier that belongs to the GTIN family. This converter validates those 12 digits, including the final check digit, before showing the equivalent fixed 14-digit representation.

Example

036000291452 → 00036000291452Two leading filler zeroes express the same GTIN-12 in a 14-digit field.

What changes in the conversion

Only the representation changes. The original GTIN-12 is not replaced or reassigned. Leading zeroes allow systems with fixed-width GTIN fields to carry the same identifier consistently.

Scope

The result confirms format and check-digit structure. It does not identify the brand owner, product description or licensing status, and it is not a barcode image quality test.

Frequently asked questions

Is a UPC-A the same as a GTIN?

UPC-A is a barcode symbology that commonly encodes a GTIN-12. The symbol and the identifier are related but not interchangeable terms.

Does this tool expand UPC-E?

No. Version 1 deliberately supports UPC-A / GTIN-12 only and does not advertise untested UPC-E expansion.
